Create Directorate of Medical Lab Services in Kwara State - AMLSN

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Kwara State Branch on Tuesday, 15th March 2022, called on the state government to create the Directorate of Medical Laboratory Services in the state. The clarion call was made by the Branch Chairman of the Association in the state, Mr Kola Ogunwale, during the Annual Scientific Conference of the Association which held at the Kwara Hotel, Ilorin.

In his welcoming address, Mr Ogunwale had appreciated the effort of the state government for its efforts in upgrading healthcare services in the state. He said that the theme for the conference was casted in view of the current realities in the country, believing that deepening of the laboratory services through this platform will undoubtedly improve the standard of laboratory services and development of manpower in other to provide a lasting solution to the current deficiency.
Aside from calling for the creation of Directorate of Medical Laboratory Services, he also charged the state government on the need to address the placement grade level of medical laboratory scientists in the state as contained on extant documents and as implemented in all states of the federation. He followed it up with a call on the government to consider expanding the internship slots for medical laboratory science graduates hatched by universities in the state
Our correspondent reports that the scientific conference is an annual event held by the Association in other to review issues in the health sector and build capacity to address them. This year’s edition featured many dignitaries, both within and outside the state which prides itself as the State of Harmony. The theme of the conference was: “Expanding Deepening of Medical Laboratory Practice In The Face Of Economic Realities: Equipment and Manpower Development".
A countdown of the dignitaries revealed that Deputy Governor Of Kwara State, Dr Kayode Alabi led the pack. Others included: Dr. G.C Okara the keynote speaker, Dr. Prince Elojukwu, Vice Chancellor Thomas Adewumi University; Prof. Lateef Oladimeji, Deputy Vice Chancellor Al-Ikmat University; Prof. Ajani, Dean of Pure and Applied Science, KWASU. In attendance also was the National Secretary of AMLSN,  Dr Muhibi and Olusoji Billyrose, AMLSN National Publicity Secretary; Comrade Muritala, Vice Chairman NLC Kwara State and Laboratory Directors University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital among many others.
In his remarks, the guest lecturer, Dr G.C Okara emphasized that the medical laboratory science is an indispensable unit in the health sector, he cited the emergence of COVID-19 as an example that clearly captured the role of medical laboratory scientists in the detection, treatment, monitoring and prevention of diseases and epidemics. He then emphasized on the need for government at all levels to improve the quality of laboratory services in Nigeria.
